when i was 4 years old my dad taught me how to make a book. keep in mind that my dad is a graphic designer and typography geek. at the time one of my favorite books was a children's illustrated version of "noah's ark." so, in rock music parlance, i decided to do a cover version of "noah's ark."

i did all the drawings and writing for the story, and let me tell you know that they are horrible! except of course they have indelible, naive charm. here's my favorite passage: "Inside Outside. They were building the inside cause they builted the outside. They walked on the grass, cut a hole, climbed up the steps, and then replaced and glued the hole. Noah's kids filled the cracks with pitch." and that's only one of several goodies. the funniest thing is that apparently as i child i wasn't interested in the actual flood at all--almost the entire book is devoted to getting the ark ready.

i hadn't seen my book in many, many years but i started thinking about how working on this may have been my first "project." perhaps with this book my dad shaped my current affinity for doing my own projects and a general feeling that the one of the most meaningful things you can do with your time is make stuff. so, anyway, i recently asked him to scan the book and send me the images. the results can be found here: noah's ark!
